Pharmacodynamics

In many breast cancers, estrogen stimulates the uncontrollable growth of cancerous cells. Also, aromatase enzymes present mainly in the adrenal glands can convert the androgens to estrogen and this estrogen furthermore influences the cancerous cells. Thus, Arimidex is a non-steroidal inhibitor that competitively binds to the aromatase enzyme and stops the production of estrogen. As a result, it inhibits the growth and spreading of the tumor cells.
