Overview

Iressa 250mg tablet is a chemotherapy medication used to treat non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Gefitinib is the generic name of this medication. It is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor that exhibits antineoplastic activity. Iressa is used in the first-line treatment of lung cancer with genetic mutations.

Pharmacodynamics

Iressa functions by stopping the working of EGFR tyrosine kinase which binds to the ATP binding site of the enzyme. EGFR refers to epidermal growth factor receptor and is often overexpressed in cancerous cells, leading to stimulation of anti-apoptotic signals. Additionally, it causes cell proliferation as well. Iressa has antineoplastic activity thus it stops the growth and spreading of cancerous cells.

DOSAGE

Iressa 250mg tablet is prescribed by the doctor hence, it is advisable to follow the prescription given as it is taken orally once every day and it can be taken with or without food.

Missed dose

It is advisable to avoid missing any doses of Iressa and in case you miss a dose of Gefticip consult your doctor immediately.

Overdose

In case of an overdose of Iressa, contact your doctor or any healthcare provider and seek medical attention immediately.


Warnings

  • Iressa can cause allergies in some patients hence, it is necessary to read the complete composition list and consult the doctor in case of any ingredient that induces allergies.
  • Inform the doctor about all the vitamin supplements, herbal medications, and prescription and non-prescription drugs since Iressa can interact with them.
  • It is advisable to avoid pregnancy and breastfeeding during and till two weeks after the last dose of Iressa tablets.
  • Also, take the Iressa tablets six hours before or after taking antacids or H2 blocker medicines like cimetidine or ranitidine.
  • Avoid alcohol consumption and also avoid operating heavy machinery during the treatment with Iressa.
  • Inform the doctor about previous health conditions like pulmonary fibrosis, lung complications, and liver disorders.
