Description

Rebif is a form of protein called beta interferon that is produced in the body. Rebif (Interferon beta-1a) injection is a prescription medicine indicated for the treatment of relapsing forms of Multiple Sclerosis in adults (aged over 18). It is not known if Rebif injection is safe and effective in children. Interferon beta-1a is an immunomodulator. It works to lower the chances of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) by reducing inflammation, affecting the functioning of the immune system, and preventing further nerve damage. Rebif (Interferon beta-1a) may also be known as a disease-modifying drug.

Interferons are a group of endogenous glycoproteins, that are bestowed with immunomodulatory, antiviral, and antiproliferative properties. Rebif (interferon beta-1a) shares the same amino acid sequence with endogenous human interferon beta.

The efficacy of Rebif has been calculated in patients with relapsing-remitting Multiple Sclerosis at certain doses ranging from 11 to 44 micrograms (3-12 million IU), administered subcutaneously (three times per week). Rebif 22 mcg has been observed to minimize the incidence (approximately 30% over 2 years) and severity of clinical relapses in patients with at least 2 exacerbations in the previous 2 years along with an EDSS of 0-5.0 at entry. The average count of patients with disability progression, as defined by at least a point increase in EDSS confirmed three months later, was decreased from 39% (placebo) to 30% (Rebif 22 mcg).
